Names of KOREA Across the World

Today, Latin-language countries refer to the nation as COREA,
while in French it is written as CORÉE. In English-speaking countries, it is widely known as KOREA.

Domestically, Koreans refer to their country
as “Dae-Han-Min-Guk” or simply “Han-Guk,”
which is a short form of the full official name.
“Dae-Han-Min-Guk” translates to “The Republic of Korea”
or “The Great Nation of Han.”

The Origin of the Name “COREA”

In the 13th century, the Italian merchant
and explorer Marco Polo (1254–1324)
introduced the name “COREA” to the Western world
through his famous travelogue, The Travels of Marco Polo.

The name combines “CORE” (referring to the Goryeo Dynasty) with the Latin suffix “-A,” which denotes a “country, territory,
or land.” Therefore, COREA literally translates to
“The Land of the Core (Goryeo) Dynasty.”
