Dosan Seowon, located in Andong, South Korea, is one of the most prestigious Confucian academies from the Joseon Dynasty. It served as a vital center of Neo-Confucian education and a place to honor the eminent scholar Yi Hwang (pen name: Toegye).

1. Establishment and Background
In 1549, the highly respected scholar Yi Hwang retired to the countryside to dedicate his life to academic study, moral cultivation, and teaching. He personally designed and built the Dosan Seodang (a lecture hall) on this site in 1561, where he taught many future scholars.

2. Transformation into a Seowon
Following his death in 1570, his loyal disciples and other Confucian scholars wished to preserve his legacy. They built shrines and expanded the facility. The construction of the academy was completed in 1576.

3. Royal Recognition
In 1575, King Seonjo bestowed a royal charter, designating it as a “Sa-aek Seowon” (a royally chartered academy). This granted the academy royal privileges, including books, land, and slaves, making it a prominent center of Confucianism in the Yeongnam region.

4. Architectural & Cultural Significance
The architecture of Dosan Seowon reflects Toegye’s philosophy of a simple, noble, and humble lifestyle. The buildings are elegantly unadorned, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding nature. Because of its historical and cultural value, Dosan Seowon was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 along with other historic Confucian academies in Korea.

*Introduction
In terms of architecture, Dosanseowon Confucian Academy complex can largely be divided into Dosanseodang compound and Dosanseowon compound. Dosanseodang area consists of living quarters and lecture halls where Toegye Yi Hwang, an eminent Confucian scholar, lived and taught his students. Dosanseowon was built after Toegye Yi Hwang passed away by his followers’ to honor the legacy of his teachings as well as to pay respects to the deceased.

Built in 1561, Dosanseodang lecture hall is the oldest building in the whole complex. It was personally designed by Yi Hwang, penname Toegye, to further his studies while educating future scholars after moving to the countryside. Living quarters used as a student dormitory were also built along with the lecture hall.

Dosanseowon compound was completed in 1576, six years after Yi Hwang’s death. Yi Hwang’s ancestral tablet was enshrined inside Sangdeoksa Shrine in 1572. Two years later, Jeongyodang Lecture Hall was built to relocate the tablet and with the addition of buildings to the hall’s east and west, the area became a seowon. In 1575, the establishment was bestowed a royal charter and a plaque with the name Dosanseowon written by Han Seok-bong, and became the Confucian academy headquarters in the Yeongnam region.

  • “ABSTRACT” from
“the Journal of Korean Institute of landscape architecture”

The BYEONG-SAN-Confucian Academy, a 17th-century World Heritage Site in Korea, is being praised as a manifestation of naturalness or non-artificiality
of the traditional Korean borrowed scenery technique, chagyeong).
Cha-gyeong = borrow scenery from and/or place the beautiful background of the scenery)

This study, however,
aims to reinterpret the chagyeong of the BYEONG-SAN Academy (hereafter the Academy) as a device of illusion evoking an idealized vision of nature. In the
process of interpretation, ‘picture and frame’—a widely accepted expression that represents the chagyeong of the Academy—will be foregrounded as the pivotal
concept mediating the change of perspectives from naturalistic to ideological.
This study consists of the following three parts.

First, it shows that ‘picture and frame’ represent a modern way of seeing the Academy as an architectural heritage
in harmony with nature; it denotes pristine nature and the empty architectural frame that safely circumscribes the innate beauty of the natural landscape.

Second, departing from the naturalistic perspective,
this study argues that the architectural framework of the Academy composes scenography enticing the viewer to imagine the idealized, Confucian image of nature that
compares to the landscape imagery found in the landscape poetry and paintings that were produced and appreciated by the 17th-century Confucian literati.

Lastly, based on the above interpretation, this study stresses that the
‘picture’ one encountered at the Academy in the 17th century was not the framed
scene of a natural landscape but the illusion it caused; the architectural ‘frame’ worked not as a symbol of naturalness but as an institutional apparatus of vision manipulating the way one sees—and therefore imagines—the landscape.
