The Story of Gamcheon Culture Village
On June 25, 1950, the outbreak of the Korean War forced 1.5 million people to flee North Korea for safety in the South.
Just five months later, on January 4, 1951, the intervention of Chinese forces triggered another massive wave of 4.8 million refugees.
With nowhere else to go, millions gathered in the harbor city of Busan, and many built makeshift homes here in Gamcheon Village.
Today, those survival stories live on through the village’s iconic, vibrant rooftops and pastel-colored walls.

The Story of GUKJE market: A legacy of Survival
The origins of Busan’s Gukje Market (국제시장) are rooted in the resilience of people striving to survive.
Its history unfolded in two major waves:
- The First Wave (1945):
Following the end of the Pacific War and Japan’s surrender to the U.S. and Allied forces, the Korean Peninsula was finally liberated. The market was initially sparked by Koreans returning home from Japan, eager to rebuild their lives. - The Second Wave (1950):
With the outbreak of the Korean War, Busan became a critical sanctuary.
Millions of refugees poured into the city, joining local residents.
In this chaotic, crowded environment, people naturally gathered to trade, laying the foundation for the market we know today.
Over the decades,
Gukje Market grew so rapidly and offered such an incredible variety of goods that it earned a famous local reputation:
“You can buy absolutely anything here—except for an elephant!”
03＊YONG-GUNG-SA Temple
As you can see in the panoramic photo above,
this Buddhist temple is uniquely perched right on the coastal rocks overlooking the vast ocean.
This seaside location is truly extraordinary, especially considering the historical background of Korean Buddhism.

“This is a truly singular and sacred place—the only United Nations cemetery in the world.
During the 37 months of the Korean War (June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953), 22 nations stood in solidarity to defend South Korea.
Today, the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan serves as the final, peaceful resting place for the brave soldiers from 13 of those participating countries.”

This is widely celebrated as the most beautiful and popular beach in Korea.
